Short Film Survey

In order to find out what it is that my target audience wanted I carried out a survey, asking a range of questions about them and what they want to see. These are my results.

This first set of questions  are more personal question, finding out what sort of people will be viewing the film I am to make. From the first question it is clear that most of my audience will be young, primarily between the ages of 11-17, but quite a few also being aged 18-34. The second question of the survey was asking the gender of the audience. From the question I learnt that a good amount of my audience would be male, though there may be quite a few female viewers as well. From both these questions I know that I must make a film that caters for a young male audience, though young females will be my secondary audience and so must make sure it is enjoyable for both these sets, though leaning more towards the male audience by perhaps showing more violence or almost following theories like Mulvey's theory of the male gaze. The next question I asked was what their ethnicity was. I found that primarily they were white British, though there were also a few black and European people. This does not affect the final sort of film I will be making. I then asked what their average household income was, which allows me to find out what social grade they were. From this I learnt that the majority of people who would potentially be viewing my film would be in social grade C2, but there was also people from social grades E and D, and C1, but no one higher, in grads B or A. This means that I will not need to cater the film to people of higher social grads, who may want to see more sophisticated and less violent films than those in lower grades, particularly in grads D or E. The last more personal question I asked was about their sexuality. This question showed that most of the audience are heterosexual, though there is also a few homo- and bi-sexual people and so the film should cater for them as well, perhaps by including a homosexual or bisexual strong character.

I then asked some questions about the film that I wish to produce, seeing what sort of thing my audience would be interested in. The first question that I asked was whether or not my audience watched British short films. From this question I found a lot did not watch British short films, though quite a lot of people did watch them. This means that I would have an audience, but I would also have to make sure that my film would appeal to people who do not watch this sort of film, perhaps by making less gritty like many see British films as.

I then asked the audience which genre of film they would prefer to watch. I provided a selection, like Fantasy/SciFi, Drama, Romance and comedy. From this question I found that the most appealing genre was psychological thrillers, though there were also a lot of popularity for all the other catagories as well, particualarly drama. This means that I would have to make a film that will appeal to a range of people, who are fans of a range of genres, though it will, primarily, be a psychological thriller, with elements of a drama film.
I then provided them with a list of different log lines for four different films and I asked them which one they would prefer. The most popular loglin was "A teenage boy is forced by both his lovers to kill either one.", with the next most popular one being, "
A resistance group experience their final downfall." These two both have the potential to follow similear ideas, looking at human nature and psychology, but the most popular one will be the one that will be used as this is clearly what the audience want to see.
I then asked my audience which film title intrests them the most. The most popular title was "Deluca" which I will be using, as it fits with most stories that may be told, as it is a name of a character, and also has a darker sort of feeling that can fit with my sort of film that I will be producing.
